Service Contraindications & Considerations

These guidelines explain when services at The Traveling Sole may need to be modified, postponed, or declined. They are not exhaustive and do not replace the required intake process, professional judgment, or medical advice.

Please provide complete and accurate health information before your session. If you are uncertain whether a service is appropriate, contact me before booking. Massage and bodywork should not be used to delay evaluation of a new, severe, or worsening medical concern.

Some items below are firm policies of The Traveling Sole, while others require individual review or medical clearance. Final service eligibility and any necessary modifications are determined based on safety, scope of practice, training, and the information available at the time of your appointment.

  • Barefoot Massage

Barefoot Massage: Is It Right for You?

Barefoot massage uses slow, broad, sustained pressure delivered with the feet and controlled body weight. It is generally firmer and more compressive than light relaxation massage.

It may be a good fit if you enjoy deeper pressure, prefer a slower and more focused session, or want therapeutic work rather than light-touch relaxation massage. However, it is not appropriate for every client.

Your safety and comfort always come first. If you are uncertain whether barefoot massage is appropriate for you, please contact me before booking.

Barefoot Massage Is Not Offered If You:

    • Are under 18 years old
    • Are pregnant or trying to conceive
    • Have an active contagious illness, fever, infection, cellulitis, phlebitis, or contagious skin condition
    • Have a known or suspected blood clot, active thrombosis, or unexplained one-sided swelling, redness, warmth, or pain
    • Are currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation
    • Have severe osteoporosis
    • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure or an unstable or serious heart condition
    • Have a recent fracture, dislocation, major bone or joint injury, or surgery that has not healed sufficiently

The appropriate waiting period following an injury or surgery may range from approximately six weeks to six months depending on the location, procedure, healing progress, and medical guidance.

Contact Me Before Booking If You Have:

These conditions do not always prevent a session, but they may require modification, postponement, or medical clearance:

    • Osteopenia
    • Varicose veins
    • Diabetes, hypoglycemia, hemophilia, or another condition affecting circulation, sensation, blood clotting, or healing
    • A history of thrombosis, aneurysm, tuberculosis, or kidney disease
    • A pacemaker, stent, shunt, or serious cardiovascular condition
    • An autoimmune or neurological condition, including Lyme disease, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, or Guillain-Barré syndrome
    • Numbness, tingling, loss of sensation, progressive weakness, or unexplained pain
    • A spinal condition such as stenosis, spondylitis, spondylosis, spondylolisthesis, or disc-related concerns
    • Surgical hardware or implants, including joint replacements, rods, plates, screws, fusions, mesh, or an IUD
    • Breast, pectoral, gluteal, or calf implants placed within the past nine months
    • A recent injury, surgery, or injection, including Botox, cortisone, an epidural, or a nerve block
    • An eye procedure or LASIK performed within the past 72 hours
    • An active autoimmune flare
    • A digestive flare such as IBS or diverticulitis
    • Long-distance air travel exceeding six hours within the previous 24 hours
    • Any other recent or significant surgery

Please also contact me if you take blood thinners, steroids, cortisone, pain medication, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory medication, or another medication that may affect sensation, circulation, bleeding, or healing.

    About Pressure and Modifications

Barefoot massage involves firm, sustained pressure and is not a light-touch modality. Pressure is adjusted within safe limits, but if firm compression is uncomfortable or inappropriate for you, another service may be recommended.

Direct barefoot pressure will not be applied over varicose veins, vulnerable implants, recent surgical sites, active inflammation, contagious skin conditions, or areas with significantly impaired sensation.

    Before Your Session

Please complete your health intake fully and accurately and notify me of any changes before each appointment. Medical clearance may be requested when additional information is needed to determine whether barefoot massage can be provided safely.

These guidelines are not exhaustive. Final service eligibility and any necessary modifications are determined by the therapist based on safety, professional judgment, scope of practice, and the information available at the time of your appointment.

  • Fascia-Focused Bodywork & In-Session Block Use

    About This Service

Fascia-focused bodywork at The Traveling Sole may include hands-on massage techniques, barefoot compression, guided breathing, supported positioning, and/or guided use of a Block Therapy block during an in-office session.

This is different from the official self-guided Block Therapy Starter Program, which has its own educational instructions, acknowledgments, and safety guidance through the Block Therapy platform.

This service may be a good fit if you:

    • Prefer a clothed or partially clothed alternative to traditional massage
    • Are comfortable with guided breathing and holding supported positions
    • Want a slower, focused approach to body awareness and movement
    • Can communicate clearly about pressure, sensation, and comfort

This Service Is Not Offered If You:

    • Are under 18 years old
    • Are pregnant
    • Have an active contagious illness, fever, infection, cellulitis, or contagious skin condition
    • Have a known or suspected blood clot, active thrombosis, or unexplained one-sided swelling, redness, warmth, or pain
    • Have a recent fracture, dislocation, or surgery that has not healed sufficiently
    • Have severe osteoporosis
    • Are currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation
    • Are experiencing an active autoimmune flare
    • Have significant loss of sensation, progressive weakness, or another neurological concern that prevents you from accurately feeling or communicating pressure
    • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure or an unstable or serious cardiovascular condition

Contact Me Before Booking If You Have:

These conditions may require modification, postponement, or medical clearance:

    • Osteopenia
    • Diabetes, neuropathy, or another condition affecting sensation or healing
    • A clotting or bleeding disorder
    • A pacemaker, stent, shunt, or serious heart condition
    • An autoimmune or neurological condition
    • Surgical mesh, spinal rods, joint replacements, plates, screws, fusions, or other implants
    • A recent injury, surgery, injection, epidural, nerve block, or cortisone treatment
    • Numbness, tingling, unexplained pain, dizziness, or weakness
    • A spinal condition or history of significant rib, chest, or abdominal injury
    • A medication affecting sensation, circulation, bleeding, inflammation, or healing
    • Any medical condition that may affect your ability to tolerate sustained pressure, supported positioning, or guided breathwork

Blocks and barefoot compression will not be applied directly over vulnerable implants, recent surgical sites, active inflammation, areas of significantly impaired sensation, or other locations where pressure may be unsafe.

Sensations and Symptoms Following a Session

Temporary mild soreness, tenderness, fatigue, or changes in how an area feels may occur following bodywork. These responses should remain manageable and improve rather than become progressively worse.

Block Therapy educational materials sometimes use terms such as “healing crisis” or “rib release.” These terms should not be used to dismiss significant, severe, or persistent symptoms. New or worsening symptoms may have causes unrelated to the session and may require medical evaluation.

Stop using the block and seek appropriate medical guidance if you experience:

    • Sudden or severe rib, chest, or abdominal pain
    • Painful popping followed by persistent pain
    • Pain that increases with breathing
    • Shortness of breath
    • Significant bruising, swelling, or tenderness
    • New or worsening numbness, weakness, or loss of sensation
    • Fever, chills, rash, or flu-like symptoms
    • Dizziness, fainting, or symptoms that feel concerning
    • Pain or other symptoms that are severe, worsening, or not resolving

Do not assume these symptoms are a harmless release or a normal part of fascia work.

    Your Responsibility

Please communicate throughout the session and immediately report sharp pain, excessive pressure, numbness, dizziness, difficulty breathing, or any sensation that feels unsafe.

These guidelines are not exhaustive. Final service eligibility, positioning, pressure, and use of equipment are determined based on safety, professional judgment, scope of practice, and the information available at the time of your appointment.

  • Himalayan Hot Stone Massage

    About Heated-Stone Massage

Himalayan hot stone massage combines massage techniques with comfortably heated stones. Heat may help create a soothing experience, but it also requires additional precautions because excessive temperature or prolonged exposure can cause burns or other adverse reactions.

The stones should feel comfortably warm—never painfully hot. Please communicate immediately if a stone feels too warm, uncomfortable, or causes burning, stinging, numbness, or unusual sensitivity.

Heated Stones Are Not Used If You:

Have an active fever, contagious illness, or infection

Have an active skin infection, open wound, burn, sunburn, or contagious skin condition in the treatment area

Have an acute injury, active swelling, or significant inflammation in the treatment area

Have a known or suspected blood clot or active thrombosis

Cannot reliably feel temperature or communicate discomfort

Have significant loss of sensation or severe neuropathy

Are unable to reposition or remove yourself safely from the heat source

Massage without heated stones may be recommended when appropriate.

Contact Me Before Booking If You Have:

These conditions may require reduced heat, shorter application, modified placement, omission of heated stones, or medical clearance:

    Diabetes

Neuropathy, numbness, tingling, or reduced temperature sensation

Heart disease, vascular disease, circulation concerns, or uncontrolled high blood pressure

    Varicose veins

    Cancer or active cancer treatment

    An autoimmune condition

    Epilepsy or a seizure disorder

Pregnancy or the possibility of pregnancy

Recent surgery, injury, injection, or medical procedure

Skin sensitivity or a condition affecting the skin

A history of heat intolerance, dizziness, fainting, or becoming overheated

A medication affecting sensation, circulation, blood clotting, blood pressure, or heat tolerance

Any condition that could affect your ability to tolerate or accurately feel heat

    During Your Session

Do not try to tolerate a stone that feels too hot. Heat intensity and placement can be changed at any time, and heated stones will be removed if their continued use is not appropriate.

The temperature, duration, and placement of heated stones are determined individually. Heated stones will not be placed directly over active inflammation, open or irritated skin, vulnerable implants, recent surgical sites, areas with impaired sensation, or locations where heat may be unsafe.

Please report burning, stinging, throbbing, dizziness, nausea, numbness, excessive warmth, or any other discomfort immediately.

These guidelines are not exhaustive. Final use of heated stones is determined based on your intake information, current condition, ability to sense and communicate temperature, and professional safety judgment.
